The movie is based on Dharmendra's story "Our Home India" based on a 1981 Hindi film. The film was shot in Bengaluru.
Kalyani Singh (Amrish Puri) is a timid young man from a small village in a state in India which is torn between warring Hindus and Muslims. He has a quiet, polite, and innocent personality. Kalyani is the son of the village chief, and his father tells him that one of the two enemies, the Muslims or the Hindus, will kill him. Kalyani is a simple man and does not understand the complexity of the world. When he is called to the nearby town of Bani, he is faced with a choice of going along with his uncle, or choosing to side with the Hindus. Kalyani is confused by all the talks of killing, for he never saw any killing in his entire life. He believes in friendship and peace. In the end, he is saved from the Muslim enemy.
It was produced and directed by Subhash Ghai. Sunil Lulla and Subhash Ghai were the assistant directors of the film. The screenplay was written by Ashok Kaul. It is a remake of 1981 Hindi film, Veer-Zara.
